About the Book

Nesar Ahmad thought he was accepting a translation job as a young man. Instead, he entered a world that would shape the rest of his life — a world of war, brotherhood, divided loyalties, and the question of what it means to serve a country that is not yet your own.

What began as a job translating words became a life shaped by danger, friendship, sacrifice, and trust. Nesar served alongside American soldiers during dangerous missions, meetings with Afghan leaders, intelligence operations, and firefights — carrying no uniform, yet carrying everything.

"Loyalty is not proven by uniform. It is proven by risk."
Nesar Ahmad, author of The Terp

The Author

Nesar Ahmad

Nesar Ahmad is an Afghan-American author, entrepreneur, podcast host, and public servant whose journey reflects resilience, service, and the pursuit of opportunity. After spending years working alongside the U.S. Army as an interpreter in Afghanistan, he brought his experiences to the United States and continued building a life centered on service, leadership, and community.

Today, Nesar works in the California Governor's Office, where he supports the day-to-day operations of state government. He is also the founder and CEO of Beyond Barriers LLC, a language services company dedicated to helping organizations and communities overcome communication barriers. He is the creator and host of the Built Not Born Podcast, where he sits down with immigrants, entrepreneurs, professionals, and community leaders to explore the struggles, sacrifices, and determination behind their success.

His memoir, The Terp: A Life Between Languages and Loyalties, shares his own story of serving as an interpreter alongside American soldiers in Afghanistan and navigating a life caught between languages, cultures, danger, and loyalty. Through his writing, business, podcast, and public service, Nesar continues to tell stories that connect people across barriers and remind us that success is often built, not born.

The Unfinished Story

Behind every mission was an interpreter.
Behind every interpreter is a story.

The story of Afghan interpreters did not end when America's military mission ended. Some rebuilt their lives in communities throughout the United States. Others continue to carry the weight of war, displacement, and uncertainty. Their service deserves to be remembered.

"We were not soldiers, yet we moved with soldiers. We were not politicians, yet we shaped political dialogue. We carried no official power, yet influence rested on our voices."
